The āFinca Vigiaā was Hemingwayās residence in Cuba from 1940 until 1960. It was his most stable home during his writing career and the birthplace of some of his greatest novels: āFor whom the bell tollsā, āThe old man and the seaā and āAcross the river and into the treesā. Mandatory place in the guided tours of Cuba and the Hemingway route, the house is preserved in the exact same way in which the author left it.
Discover his writings in the bathroom wall, his working spot, hunting trophies and even the typing machine that was used for āThe old man and the seaā.It was while living here that he was awarded the Nobel in literature in 1954 an award that he devoted in part to the Cuban people.
It is at this place that his yacht āEl Pilarā rest. This yacht was constantly used to expand Hemingwayās horizons and draw inspiration for his novel.
Such is the level of conservation that It almost seems if the man itself could emerge from one of its windows. This is the reason for the āNational Restoration Awardā which was granted to the museum in 2007.
The next stop in the Eminway route is a little village near to Havana. Cojimar is an antique and picture-perfect small town located in the east coast of Havana. It is the port at which El Pillar used to dock in between adventures. The frequency of Hemingways visits turn him into a community member beloved and respected by the locals.
Such is the case that upon his death a bust of the writer was placed in the towns central square, a bust that was built with the material from melted propellers from the boats of the local fishermanās.
It was here that he meet men like āGregorio Fuentesā the commander of āEl Pilarā a robust man that would go on to live over a 100 years and condensate all the experience of this lifestyle, and would pass some of it to Hemingway.
Before to finish the Emingway route in Havana, We will enjoy one the most popular bar in Cuba.
There, Ernest Hemingway enjoyed talking to the locals like Anselmo Hernandez, a local fisherman that would answer questions from the journalist in long interviews conducted at the bar āLas Terrazasā. Thats interviews would became direct inspiration for the great literary work āThe old man and the seaā.
Hemingway would turn to be a āregularā at āLas Terrazasā so much so that his favorite spot would become perpetually reserved. Even today Ernest Hemingwayās presence can be felt throughout the town, from its central square, piers, bar and sea line. But specially so from the lifestyle of rough maritime man and woman that lured the Writer and his imagination.
